Anywhere, There
by Jenn dela Cruz
When I walk I part the air and always the air moves in to fill the spaces where my body's been. - from "Keeping it Whole," Mark Strand (b. 1934)
In November, the Sev Shoon Arts Center is happy to feature "Anywhere, There", a series of monotypes by Jenn dela Cruz. This body of work captures images in transitory states. Figures, abstract forms, color and light take turns as the featured element in the works. The connecting thread is the tension between what is active and passive, be it physical, emotional or psychological. "My work is predominantly about how one relates to the world, to others and to oneself. In this series I explore these themes through the interplay of movement and stillness between figures and space to convey stories of quiet transience. I am interested in the whole of an image and use a minimal pictorial language to discover and depict universally recognizable gestures. "

New Works
by Magda Baker
In October, we will proudly showcase the prints of Magda Baker. "My recent prints are sometimes gory, yet often humorous. It enhances the aphorisms I use by revealing the complexity beneath the words' seemingly calm surface, and it shows that language can disguise a grizzly reality. I also strive to turn the mundane into art and show the coexistence of humor, gore and melancholy."

LIFE IN A JAR: Existentialist kartoonischen by Tito Titus
and
Recent Work by Blanka Dvorak
Life in a Jar, a series of mixed media paintings by Tito Titus, wrestles with the daily existentialist challenge to choose consciously and courageously, engage life passionately and experience it directly. An absurd struggle? You decide. 100% of artistıs proceeds will be donated to a project benefiting residents of St. Martin de Porres Shelter for the Elderly Homeless.

Recent Work by Blanka Dvorak who is visiting from Prague for the summer, features her beautiful monotypes. This body of work shows her fascination for a world that she finds amusing. "Human travail, crazy behavior, determination for self destruction and inner motives are fascinating to me. As part of the world, I observe and experience it all, rather than try to skip the bad parts and enjoy only the good, for I see them both as indivisible."

Elephant Prints
Monotypes by Nancy Reithaar
I chose to draw elephants because elephants are large. Their size and the way they seemed to look at me made them engaging and accessible subjects; big mass with delicate features. In my work, I focus on the animal and not the barn or the keepers for I feel that the absence of details creates an environment. I wonder about the future of elephants, and whether humans can save them from extinction by breeding them in captivity.
