Jay Lazerwitz, "Life Lines"- May 2004
This work is a confluence of various readings -- as
“life lines” relate to the physical connections
of people, to a place or as interconnections; as “a
line in the sand”-- something that separates us,
or makes clear the boundaries; but also as a foretelling
of the future.
My work is inspired by my acceptance of the bonds that
bring us together, through desire and needs, yet separate
people. These bonds are powerful, yet ephemeral and
so fragile.
In my work, the theme of the world is expressed as
linear, overlapping, and woven elements. My direction
has been to integrate the human and landscape forms.
The issue for me personally is how we learn to live
together, as peoples on one planet. The direction we
decide to give our lives’ purpose is a matter
of individual concern, but it also affects those around
us.
I work in encaustic medium (pigmented beeswax), which
allows the application of translucent and opaque layers
to be interlaced. This process is both additive and
subtractive, complementing the exploration of “life
lines”. The medium also allows the flexibility
to explore various technical manipulations and other
image transfer processes to focus my conceptions.
