The Residency

Imagine waking up every day, away from your life’s distractions in a cozy art retreat with two large bedrooms, an inviting dining room, a modern kitchen, a comfortable living room with wood burning stove, two covered porches — facing East and West respectively, a wonderful garden, and an infinity of singing birds. Imagine a place with high ceilings that leave plenty of room for ideas to grow; a look-out to sea from an armchair on the front porch or a ten minute walk to the beach where the islands of Puget Sound rise out of the ocean in the distance. The focal point is Protection Island, a magnificent rocky outcrop that is a Federally protected National Wildlife Refuge. Protection Island is known for its breeding colony of Tufted Puffin, rhinoceros auklets, and gulls, one of the few such locations south of British Columbia to serve as a home for so many birds. It is on the flyway for many migrating birds. Seals (harbor and elephant), sea lions, orcas, and other cetaceans are often seen nearby.

Walk to your studio through a garden filled with native plants and birds (yes they do splash in the birdbaths!) to work for uninterrupted hours on your art.

When in need for a break, you can check out the nearby Discovery Bike Trail or explore the endless trails through the surrounding forest of Miller State Park, or take a ride to Sequim. There are two bicycles on the property for your enjoyment. If you want a more laid-back outing, you can walk on the many roads that meander through Sunshine Acres; it is most likely that you won’t even see a car.

You will be away from the hustle and bustle of your busy life, yet close to the convenience of Sequim, a small town with good coffee, organic grocery stores, restaurants, and many quaint businesses as well as some convenient large stores.

Artists have to bring their own supplies (out of town artists can arrange to have supplies delivered at a local address) and may apply solo or in pairs. We welcome artists from all disciplines: writers, photographers, filmmakers, and visual artists.

The Rocket Transportation bus will take you right in front of our door. For more information, check their website at www.gorocketman.com.
